NEW DELHI: Is this a case of diplomatic overkill or just the slow grind of the bureaucratic machinery? Five days ago, India withdrew all subsidy on cooking gas and kerosene being provided to Bhutan - arguably India's only unquestioned friend among its neighbours - creating a huge crisis in the tiny, landlocked kingdom and bringing the bilateral ties under strain.

    6. Thank you for posting the news mam. According to me complete news item should be posted so that it is convenient to us if we don't have any prior knowledge about any particular topic.

As far as the news is concerned in my opinion India is right in withdrawing the subsidies from Bhutan as our country is itself struggling with rising fuel prices that it is in no position to help others. But also, may be our government could have issued a fair warning to Bhutan about this withdrawal so that they could develop some plans or strategies to handle the situation.

I wonder what will be the course of time ahead to deal with neighbouring countries?

Islamist gunmen kill 42 in school attack in Nigeria

Islamic extremists killed 42 people, mostly students, in an overnight attack on a secondary school in restive Yobe state, a medical worker and residents said Saturday. Earlier the death toll was counted as 29 students and one teacher, which has now increased to a total of 42, mostly students. Gunmen behind the attack are believed to be Islamists from Nigeria's Boko Haram insurgent group.
This barbaric action of the extremists has crossed all the limits when they burnt the students alive.

Pepsi, Coca Cola and other soft drink makers struggle as early rains dampen peak sales season

Early and heavy rains flooding almost the entire country have hit soft drink sales in June, the most critical month for the 14,000-crore industry.
With growth slowing to single digits, soft drink giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are stepping up consumer promotions and trade discounts to push sales.
The April-June quarter marks the highest spurt in soft drink sales in a year, contributing close to 40% of annual sales.

To counter the impact of early monsoon, PepsiCo is focusing on providing better value to consumers through pricing in traditional trade and driving distribution, especially in rural areas, the PepsiCo spokesman said.

A Coca-Cola India spokesperson maintained that the seasonality curve for beverages industry was 'tapering off' and that the firm was continuing to offer products in different packs at varying price points.
Besides trade incentives, Coca-Cola has been pushing 200-ml glass bottles of brand Coke priced at 8 in smaller markets at the cost of profitability, hoping to make up in volumes.

Early rain is considered good for paddy. However, in North India, heavy and unusually early rains have raised a red flag for the crop. In many places, farmers who were not expecting heavy rains so early had not even prepared their field for sowing. Also, low-lying areas have been flooded. If things don't improve soon, farmers will have to re-sow.

And we can have a debate that "Does the different distribution and packaging methods adopted by Pepsi and coca-cola will really help them to raise the demand"??

    4. Soft drinks industry is an industry that sells their products through high promotion and advertising. But the arrival of monsoon affected the industry worstly. No one like to drink any kind of soft drinks in this monsoon season. Discounted price could help to improve their sales but not that much to cover their back lots. And we can put up the topics regarding effects of monsoon and the worst affected parties.

GILLETE PROMOTERS ,DIRECTORS BARRED FROM MARKET FAILING TO MEET PUBLIC FLOAT RULES
Mumbai: Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India on Friday barred Gillette India's promoters and directors from dealing in the securities markets and imposed a freeze on all corporate benefits as it failed to comply with the minimum public shareholding norms.
The order follows the disposal of Gillette's appeal by the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) on July 3 against a previous decision by Sebi, which had rejected Gillette's proposal to reclassify Indian promoters as non-promoters.
Sebi also restrained the directors of the company from holding any new position in listed companies till the company brings down the promoter holding to the mandatory 75%.Besides, Sebi also warned Procter & Gamble and Poddar Group - the promoters of the company of further penal action including monetary penalties, prosecution proceedings and restriction in its trading in the event of continued non-compliance.
As per minimum public holding norms, all private sector listed companies were required to achieve at least 25% public shareholding by June 3, 2013.
Gillette had sought to meet the 25% minimum public shareholding threshold by reclassifying its promoter shareholding as non-promoter shareholding, but its proposal was rejected by Sebi as the regulator felt the route intended to circumvent the guidelines and was not in line with the "spirit" of the norms.

The Union Cabinet, this week passed an ordinance to implement the National Food Security Bill (NFSB). The bill guarantees legal entitlement of food grains at a subsidised price to around 67 per cent of India's population. The ordinance will come into effect immediately once it is signed by the President. But it also needs to be approved by both the houses of Parliament in the monsoon session within six weeks of first sitting.
In the medium term, while its social impact will be positive, the economic impact could be slightly negative. Besides increasing the burden on the government finances and fueling inflation, the NFSB could face implementation issues leading to resource wastage. It also said that million of tons of food grains are rotting in open as the country lacks storage facility even as people are dying of hunger.

I think this is Vote bank politics from UPA as there was no urgency shown by UPA to pass this bill in the last 8 years but now with the upcoming election, the bill has been passed through ordinance route, without any discussion in the Parliament.
Having said this,I also think this scheme will benefit the poor as it will provide food grains at a subsidised price.

In my views I think this is completely the vote bank politics as the elections are approaching and so UPA is coming up with different schemes so that they can gain the votes of the people ....Although this scheme will definitely benefit the poor as they will be given the food grains at subsidized rates. But this is not done to benefit the poor .This is just the vote bank politics.

This Food Security Bill will be disastrous for our nation. Imagine there is a drought for in 2-3 states. India will be short of grain, and will have to import grain, in addition to farmer rescue package. This will completely destroy India's finances; it will lead to a much larger Current Account Deficit (CAD). Even with all this spending, it will not provide much stimulation to the economy

Mulayam Singh not even fit to sweep PM's residence, says Beni Prasad Verma

Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma today kicked up another controversy with his barbs at friend-turned foe Mulayam Singh Yadav, saying that the SP chief was not even fit to sweep the Prime Minister's residence, drawing instant rebuke from the Congress.

"Yadav wants to become Prime Minister. He should first try to get the job of a sweeper at the residence of the PM," 77-year Verma said at a programme in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad. COMMODITY PRICES HAVE FALLEN IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS. SHOULD YOU INVEST IN THIS ASSET CLASS?

The past few months have been harsh on commodity investors, most obviously on those with a stake in gold, silver or oil. Had you invested in gold in January 2013, you would have lost one-tenth of your investment.

Gold fell from Rs 30,600 for 10 gms in January to Rs 27,600 in June. Return on gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) was the worst affected among all gold-related investments for the period January-April 2013, losing about 16% value due to the sharp fall in gold prices on global exchanges in mid-April.

The metal fell 9% in one day in April; it is down 20% since reaching a high of $1,800 in August 2011. Aram Shishmanian, CEO, World Gold Council, says the fall was triggered by speculative trading in the futures markets.

  10. FIFA bars Iraq from hosting friendly football matches again

World soccer body FIFA has again barred Iraq from holding any friendly football matches due to soaring violence, just three months after the ban was lifted.

Iraq received the notification from FIFA on Wednesday,3rd July, and the ban will be in force until further notice.

FIFA has issued a resolution to prevent any friendly matches in Iraq after increasing attacks on playgrounds and an assault in which Mohamed Abbas, the coach of the Karbala football club, was killed.

FIFA decided March 21 to lift a ban that had been imposed on Iraq to prevent it from hosting any friendly matches.

On March 26, Baghdad hosted a friendly between Iraq and Syria and the home team won 2-1.

On May 27, the Iraq lost 0-1 to visiting Liberia in another friendly in Baghdad.

High-profile bomb attacks are still common in Iraq despite the dramatic decrease in violence since its peak in 2006 and 2007when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said Monday 761 Iraqis were killed and another 1,771 were wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in June.

  13. Kohli leads the way with ton, India beat WI to stay afloat

Kohli has registered his first win as skipper. West Indies were already on the back foot when the rain delay shelved some overs off. Chasing 274 for an unlikely win and 219 to deny India the bonus point, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma ripped through the middle order. Roach and Narine delayed the inevitable with a 58 run stand but Jadeja took the remaining wickets to seal a massive 102 run victory. India's victory has given them the bonus point and the tournament is now wide open.

Team India have posted a mammoth total of 311 runs at the loss of seven wickets after 50 overs against West Indies. The partnership between Kohli and Ashwin has turned the match completely. The duo added 90 runs from just 49 balls to lift India to a massive total. West Indies lost the plot completely after the dismissal of Jadeja. They bowled directionless bouncers, predictable slower ones and let the advantage slip completely. Kohli made his 14th ODI hundred and it will require a record beating effort if West Indies are to chase this score down.

However another South African – Hashim Amla – with 11 hundreds in 71 innings – is also scoring hundreds at will and can expunge Kohli’s record.

Samsung makes Smart move with Boxee buyout
Samsung has acquired Israel-based start-up firm Boxee in a move that would likely make it a big challenge to Apple and Google in the next wave of entertainment that marries conventional TV sets with on-demand video via Internet.

Boxee offers streaming media content such as live TV, cloud-based videos-on-demand and internet applications through its set top boxes — branded as Boxee TV.

The buyout gives Samsung ownership rights to jazz up the humble Boxee TV and stay ahead in a highly-competitive smart TV market in which software and design to match Apple and Google are critical. Though ailing somewhat as a small startup, Boxee packs a talented team and a cutting-edge product that could help Samsung move up in the game.

Boxee TV is essentially a set-top-box that merges live TV broadcast, a cloud-based digital-video-on-demand service and Internet applications in a single device.

Boxee had recently announced that its new Boxee TV would be available from November this year for $99 (R5,940).

Cloud-based video-on-demand means that videos will get uploaded on Boxee’s servers instead of getting stored on the local hard drive of the device, thus giving users flexibility to access these content anytime, from anywhere.

“We’re pleased to announce that the Boxee team will be joining Samsung,” Boxee wrote on its website conforming the deal.

“The deal will help us continue to improve the overall user experience,” tech website Mashable quoted a Samsung representative. Mashable quoted a few Israeli publications saying the deal could be worth $30 million (Rs 182 crore).

  16. Brazilian mob decapitates soccer referee after he stabs player

(Reuters) - One man has been arrested in northern Brazil after a referee who fatally stabbed an amateur player over his refusal to leave the field was decapitated by a mob, police said on Saturday.

Referee Octavio da Silva, 20, stabbed player Josenir dos Santos, 30, on June 30 after dos Santos refused to heed his order to leave, police spokesman Kena Souza told Reuters.

A mob then turned on da Silva, killing him before severing his head in the remote town of Pio XII, named after a former pope. A 27-year-old man was arrested on July 2 and police in the regional headquarters of Santa Ines will continue to investigate the incident, Souza said.

Brazil has made significant strides in lowering homicide rates in recent years, as millions were lifted from poverty, but it faces mounting pressures to show it is a safe place for tourists before 12 Brazilian cities host the 2014 soccer World Cup and Rio de Janeiro the Olympic Games in 2016.

In Rio de Janeiro on the day of the brawl, Brazil's national team handily defeated Spain in the Confederations Cup, considered a test run for next year's molyuch bigger championship. The eight-team tournament was marked by an unexpected wave of demonstrations, some violent, in part to protest the $14 billion being spent on World Cup preparations amid a lack of adequate public services.

Furthermore there used to be a time when sports fans from different teams could sit down and have a friendly chat, united by their love of the game itself. But so many kids these days choose a team because it is a winner and all they're interested in is results. And when things don't go their way they vent their disappointment in a violent frenzy. We need to put sport in its rightful place within the context of life in general, and also put the healthy values of sport ahead of any petty tribal ones!

Toothpaste companies rush to brush up on white

CHENNAI: India's obsession with 'white' never fails to surprise. After a flood of skin-whitening products, the focus is now on teeth. The Rs 3,500-crore toothpaste segment in India, over the last few months, has seen all FMCG majors bringing out products specifically promising the user whiter teeth, Colgate's Visible White being the latest product in the basket.

The new 'beauty and whitening' segment already constitutes 3% of the overall market.

In the west, beauty and teeth-whitening products are a well established trend, with not just toothpastes but other products like floss or whitestrips.Similar products could enter the Indian market, especially with P&G announcing its entry into India's toothpaste category under the Oral-B brand in 2014. "Consequently, the competition is expected to intensify and we believe differentiation and innovation will pick up," Abneesh Roy and Pooja Lath, analysts with Edelweiss, said. "This is a fiercely competitive market with big brands, and it is also a heterogeneous market, so companies continuously look for differentiation and create segments," Bisen said.

National Conference will never be part of NDA: Omar
The party working president and Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has made it clear that the ruling National Conference(NC) will never be part of NDA. Omar does not see a situation in which NC, which has 3 Lok Sabha MPs and 2 Rajya Sabha MPs, would enter into "any sort of alliance" with the BJP in the future.
The chief minister said his party has only two options — the UPA and United Front . NDA was not an option, he added. "The answer is never," said Omar, who was a minister of state in the Vajpayee government, when asked whether NC will be part of NDA in the future. "I don't see a situation particularly in the current leadership in the BJP and looking at the future leadership of the BJP that the NC will enter into any sort of alliance with NDA," he said.
Asked about NC's previous alliance with the BJP in the NDA, Omar said, "NC's relationship was not a relationship between the BJP and NC. It was largely between National Conference and Atal Bihari Vajpayee because he was seen as a unifying force who brought people together, who put aside regional issues in national interest, who actually looked at problems of the state and sought to resolve them."

What could be the possible reasons that have made the relationships sore between NC and NDA?

Omar Abdullah has said that when he was a Union Minister at the time when NDA was in power,it was more of a relation between NC and Atal Bihari Vajpayee as he saw Vajpayee as a secular leader who put aside regional issues in national interest.
But in current scenario, specially when Narendra Modi looks like to be the probable Prime Minister if NDA comes into power,Omar Abdullah doesn't sees the same leadership qualities.

Apple had been accused of colluding with five publishers to boost e-book prices beginning in late 2009, as the Silicon Valley giant was preparing to launch its popular iPad tablet.

Only Apple went to trial, while the publishers - Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group Inc and Macmillan, settled with the U.S. government and the states. The plaintiffs have shown that the publisher defendants conspired with each other to eliminate retail price competition in order to raise e-book prices, and that Apple played a central role in facilitating and executing that conspiracy.
